Rachel was born on 1973 in Castro Valley, California to Catholic parents Robert Bob Maddow a former United States Air Force Captain and Elaine Maddow, a school program administrator. Though being grown up in a very conservative community, she was highly competitive girl. She excelled in volleyball, basketball and swimming in Castro Valley High School which was cut short due to the shoulder injury.


After graduating from Castro Valley High School, she joined Stanford University. Upon receiving the bachelor's degree in Public policy from the University, she relocated to San Francisco. She was active in volunteering towards AIDS organization, which earned her the Rhodes scholarship. Due to her desire to help AIDS patients, she wrote her thesis on HIV/AIDS. She graduated from Oxford University with a doctorate in Political Science.

She started her career in 1999 as a co-host in WRNX Radio. She subsequently hosted the morning show 'Big Breakfast' for 2 years. Successful audition of Air America, landed her on a co-host job. Though the show was cancelled, she was rewarded with her own Radio Show 'The Rachel Maddow Show', which turned out to be one of the highest rated programs for Air America.

As she was successful in Radio, she easily translated her success into cable television. She made her TV debut in 2006 as a regular in MSNBC show ' The situation with Tucker Carlson'. Due to her success in TV and Radio, MSNBC signed an exclusive contract with her as a political analyst in Jan 2008. In no time, she had her own show 'The Rachel Maddow Show' the same name as her Radio Show. Her TV show fetched numerous awards and huge bump in MSNBC TV ratings. Television Critics association award for 'Outstanding Achievement in News and Television' was awarded for her TV Show. She was named 'The breakout star of 2008'.

Her public image rose tremendously mainly due to her show. Several newspapers and magazines including 'New York Times', 'Hollywood Reporter', 'The New Republic' did a profile on her. Her political views and thoughts were appreciated from all quarters.

Apart from being a television host, she used to write an article per month for the 'Washington Post' for a time span of 6 months.

She currently resides in Manhattan with her partner Susan Mikula, an artist. She openly admitted that she was gay when she was 17 years old. The couple have a Labrador retriever as a pet. Though suffering from cyclical depression from her childhood, she managed to achieve great success as a TV host. Coping with depression does not reduce her energy. She openly talks about politics in all of her TV Shows which makes her the most influential person. She has a net worth of $20 million, which makes her one of the richest TV show personality.
