Teryl was born in Vancouver in born November 9, 1962. Rothery began taking dancing lessons at the age of nine and considered starting her career in the entertainment industry in 1995. At the age of 13, she appeared in the musical Bye Bye Birdie, and at the age of 14, she appeared in the Marpole Community Theatre's performance of The Sound of Music. She danced on The Irish Rovers Show as a child, and at the age of 18, she made her television debut in a Halloween special for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
