Matt Lauer was born on 30 December 1957 in New York, USA. He did his graduation from the school of Media Arts and Studies. He later completed his degree in 1997 after 15 years of living the university. He began his journalism career in 1979 when he started producing the news for a private channel in West Virginia.

Lauer has been married twice. The first time he was married to Nancy Alspaugh but later got a divorce due to certain unknown factors. After the divorce, he married Annette Roque and has been since then living a very happy life with his wife. He has three children with his wife named Jack, Thijs, and Romy.
