Miguel Cotto

Miguel Angel Cotto Vazquez was born on October 29, 1980 in in Rhode Island, United States. His parents are Puerto Ricans and his family moved back to Puerto Rico, when he was a kid. He was raised in Caguas. He also has a brother José Miguel Cotto. He began boxing as a kid to help lose the weight.


Later he attended the Bairoa Gym in his native town. He started his professional way in the end of the 90s. In the 1998 he participated in the Junior World Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina and reached the second place. The next year he appeared at the Pan American Games in Canada. He also competed at the Boxing World Championships in Houston, Texas. He ended his amateur career with the amazing score of 125-23.

He started his professional career as a boxer with an incredible victory against John Brown, who was a world title contender. In the 2001 he go injury, because of a car accident. With a knockout he defeated Demetrio Ceballos during the fight in Las Vegas in 2003. In the next year, being in Las Vegas again he defeated the former world title challenger, Lovemore N'dou and reached a huge level of fame. In the 2004 he finally won against Kelson Pinto from Brazil.

A few months later he defended his title after the fight with world champion Randall Bailey. He was even honored with the title of Puerto Rico's fighter of the year for 2004 by Puerto Rican boxing commission. His light welterweight period was pretty successful and in the 2005 he met Olympic gold medalist Mohamed Abdulaev from Uzbekistan, it was the last boxer to beat him as an amateur athlete.

In the 2006 he defeated Carlos Quintana by technical knockout and finally entered to the welterweight division. During his welterweight career, he got numerous victories against such famous boxers like Alfonso Gómez, Shane Mosley, Michael Jennings and Joshua Clottey. He lost just two fights against Mexican boxer Antonio Margarito in the 2008 and Manny Pacquiao in the 2009.

He moved to the light middleweight division in the 2010. His first fight was against Israeli Champion Yuri Foreman. In the 2011 he met Antonio Margarito again, their fight was at the Madison Square Garden, New York. He won with a TKO in the 10th round. His career has taken a bit of a nosedive in the 2012, when he lost two fights in a row against both American Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Austin Trout. For the last three years he reached three victories against Delvin Rodríguez, Sergio Martínez and Daniel Geale. His last fight was in the 2015 against Canelo Álvarez and he lost via unanimous decision.

Additionally, he is an owner of a non-profit organization "El Ángel", which promotes physical activity and measures against infant obesity. He is married to Melissa Guzmán. Along with his wife, he has three children, named Luis, Alondra and Miguel Cotto III. He also has an Illegitimate daughter from a previous relationship. He has a net worth of 25 million dollars.
