Personal Life
According to his biography, Tim Westwood took birth in the town of Lowestoft, situated in the county of Suffolk in England, on the date 3rd October 1957. His father, Bill Westwood, was the retired ‘Bishop of Peterborough’. Westwood was brought up by his father in the county of East Anglia, where he spent most of his childhood growing up in the neighborhood. Westwood went to the Norwich School to complete his schooling, which was an independently working school, but he later transferred to the local comprehensive. He is married to his long-term girlfriend and he is a father of two children.
Tim has suffered through a lot of criticism in his life. He was rumored to have a fake dialect of Black-British origin and he falsified his pronunciation. These claims were discarded because he comes from a common white middle-class British family and it is not possible for him to have that dialect by birth.
He has also been criticized for giving out wrong information about his age and his background to a journalist, where he claimed to be 27 years old when he was originally 43 years old. The Leader of the Conservative Party also accused him of spreading violence through the genre of hip-hop. In 1999, he was in a drive-by shooting incident, where he wounded his arm as the motor-biker shot him and his assistant.
Career
Tim Westwood started his DJing career in the early 1980s where he worked as a presenter at the co-owned radio station “Kiss FM”. In 1987, he joined the more prominent radio station “Capital FM”, where he hosted his rap shows in the genre of hip-hop till the year 1994. During his time at the Capital FM, he got to work in the documentary, “Open Space”, of the BBC channel, where he received his exposure as a television presenter, in the year 1987.
After that, he got an offer by the BBC channel’s “Radio 1” radio station, where he got to work as a presenter for his first national rap show of UK. The show was followed up by a concert where he performed alongside personalities like Notorious B.I.G. and Puff Daddy. Westwood worked for BBC till 2013 that incorporated 20 years of his sheer hard work and passion for music.
He resigned from BBC after he was replaced by Charlie Sloth in his show “1Xtra” and he then rejoined “Capital FM”, where he started hosting Capital Xtra’s rap show. He is still a presenter there. Tim’s independent company, Justice Entertainment, has presented many short documentaries and television programs on the network UKTV’s channel UK Play.
He has won many awards, like the Music of Black Origin Awards in the years of 2000, 2003, and 2005 in the category of Best UK DJ, as he was one of the few DJ artists who legally played hip-hop music on a radio channel. Tim’s net worth is estimated to be around 16 million US dollars.
