An African-American actress and singer Phylicia Rashad was born on June 19, 1948 in Houston, Texas. The maiden last name of Phylicia was Ayers-Allen. She got it from both her parents. Her mother Vivian Ayers was a very talented poet, writer and artist, her father Andrew Arthur Allen used to work as an orthodontist.


Phylicia has three siblings, two brothers: Tex who became a jazz-musician and Hugh Allen who became a banker. Her sister Debbie Allen was also an actress and director. Her childhood Phylicia Rashad spent in Mexico living there with her family, so she perfectly speaks both English and Spanish.

In 1970, she graduated from Howard University with a degree in Fine Arts. After graduation, she played in several plays but left the stage in 1982. Right after that, she received a regular role in a soap opera One Life to Live where she played Courtney Wright. She has worked in the series from 1983 to 1984.

The 1984 was the year of her first award. She got a main role of Clair Hanks Huxtable in a TV sitcom The Cosby Show, aired on NBC from September 20, 1984 (1984-09-20) to April 30, 1992. Phylicia for this role was nominated on Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (1985 and 1986), and she won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series (1988 and 1989). In the role of Clair Hanks Huxtable Phylicia appeared in the spin-off series from The Cosby Show - A Different World (1988 – 1990).

Then she had a role in a well-known soap opera Santa Barbara. Her character Felicia Dalton appeared in only three episodes, however, that became a significant contribution to her career.

From 1985 to 1996, she played in many TV movies and series, including The Love Boat (1985), Uncle Tom's Cabin (1987), Mickey's 60th Birthday (1988), False Witness (1989), Reading Rainbow (1990), American Playhouse (1993), The Possession of Michael D (1995) and other. Most of the roles were episodic or minor.

Her next noticeable role was in TV series Cosby, aired on CBS from September 16, 1996, to April 28, 2000. Phylicia played in 92 episodes and for this role, she won the NAACP Image Award in 1998 and was nominated on Satellite Award.

In 2008, she portrayed Lena Younger in a TV movie A Raisin in the Sun. This was also her successful role, which brought to her nominations on Primetime Emmy Award and Screen Actors Guild Award. She won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special.

Phylicia Rashad had three husbands: William Lancelot Bowles, Victor Willis and Ahmad Rash?d. With the last husband, they divorced in 2001.
