She played Marianne Dashwood in the period drama film Sense and Sensibility in 1995 by Ang Lee, for which she received her first BAFTA award.

She became international after her brilliant performance in the romantic film Titanic in 1997. It was her highest grossing film to that point. Her period film Quills in 2000 was critically acclaimed.
