Gayle King was born on 28th December 1954 in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Her father was an electrical engineer and her mother was a housewife. Because of her father’s work Gayle spent most of her childhood in Turkey where she studied at an American school. She came back to Maryland later with her family. She graduated in 1976 from the University of Maryland and got double degree in psychology and sociology. She started working as an anchor and reporter at WDAF- TV in Kansas City, Missouri. Later she was hired for WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut, as a news anchor. She remains employed there for 18 years.


Gayle cohosted a daytime talk show with Robin Wagner called Cover to Cover in 1991. Later in 1997 she was offered her own talk show, The Gayle King show, which wasn’t a success and was cancelled after the first season. She worked as an editor of The Oprah Magazine in 1999 and she was also employed as a correspondent for the Oprah Winfrey show and Good Morning America. Later in 2006 she started hosting her own show The Gayle Show on XM Satellite Radio. King was also involved in the planning and creation of the Legends Weekend. She currently stars on her own talk show, The Gayle King Show, which airs on OWN. She possesses a love for acting since childhood as her female parent was also a dancer. She was encouraged by her mother to join dance classes and pursue her passion. She has completed her high school from Gregory Advance School. She was then enrolled in the School of Education and Social Policy SESP on scholarship; from there she received her bachelor degree in journalism. She was good in academics and extracurricular activities at the same time. She was good in dancing, gymnastics and cheer leading dance along with academics

King is famous for her friendship with Oprah Winfrey. She is also Oprah’s business associate. They have known each other since 1976 n have been the best of friends since then.King first met Oprah when they were both working together at a Baltimore television station, long before the two became famous. Gayle was a production assistant and Oprah was the station's news anchor.

 At the New York Women in Communication Matrix Awards, while presenting king with her award Oprah praised her and thanked her longtime confidant and true friend for teaching her the meaning of true love. Winfrey always describes king as her true friend who always wanted the best for her and who has never been jealous or envious of her. Winfrey describes Gayle as a friend who cares more about her life than even she does herself.

Currently divorced Gayle was once married to William G. Bumpus, a lawyer and an assistant attorney general in Connecticut, for 11 years from 1982 to 1993. She has a son and a daughter. Kirby Lynette King Bumpus, Kings Daughter graduated in 2008 from Stanford with a double major in Human Biology and Psychology. She is intelligent, no doubt!
