Born on January 24, 1974, to father John A. Helms and mother Pamela Ann in Atlanta, Georgia, Edward Parker Helms spent most of his childhood days growing up with his brother Chris in Atlanta. He did his schooling from The Westminster Schools and graduated in the year 1992 from there. While in school, he loved to play the guitar and was also interested in theatrical arts. He went on to do his geology major from the Oberlin College in Ohio, but later changed his major to film theory and technology. He graduated from the Oberlin College with a degree in film theory and technology in the year 1996. He is an American by nationality and belongs to white ethnicity.


After his graduation from the Oberlin College, he shifted to New York City where he started working as a video editor. Along with being a video-editor, he also pursued stand-up comedy. He eventually stopped doing video-editing and began doing the commercial voice-over. He has voice-over work for many big names like Burger King, Lycos, etc.

He got his big acting break when he was cast as a correspondent for the television show The Daily Show in the year 2002. He was a series regular and worked in the show until the year 2009. His next major role in television was when he was cast for the role of Andy Bernard in the 2006 show The Office. He has done several small and minor roles in many television shows which includes Cheap Seats as Bradley Wallace in 2004, Upright Citizens Brigade as Guest Monologist in 2008, Wainy Days as a doctor in 2008, Children's Hospital as a doctor in 2008, Wilfred as Daryl in 2011, The Mindy Project as Dennis in 2012, Brooklyn Nine-Nine as Jack Danger in 2014, Bojack Horseman as Kyle in 2015 and Jake and Amir as Mickey in 2015.

He made his film debut in the year 2004 when he was cast as Bunker McLaughlin in the movie Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story. His most popular roles until now has been when he portrayed the role of Dr Stuart Price in the movie The Hangover in the year 2009 and Russell Griswold in the movie Vacation in the year 2015. He has done several movies in his career which includes Evan Almighty as Ark Reporter in 2007, I’ll Believe You as Leon in 2007, Confessions of a Shopaholic as Garret E. Barton in 2008, Monster vs. Aliens as news reporter in 2009, Cedar Rapids as Tim Lippe in 2011, We’re the Millers as Brad Gurdlinger in 2013, Stretch as Karl in 2014 and Love the Coopers as Hank in 2015.
