From his biography, Steven A Smith was born in the city of Bronx area in the city of New York City in the year 1967. He grew up in Hollis section at Queens. Smith is a second child in the family of six children. He was born with four older sisters with young brother called Basil. He was born with a half brother on the side of the father. Her parents were born in Saint Thomas, in the U.S Virgin Islands and he was managing the hardware store. On her maternal grandmother, Smith is white but other grandparents are black. Smith finished at Thomas Edison High School found in Queens.
After finishing Fashion Institute of Technology in one year, he received the basketball scholarship and he attended Winston-Salem State University, the black university based in North Carolina. When he was in college, he was playing basketball under the Hall of Fame coach called Clarence Gaines. When he was still with this team, Smith was writing for a column at University Newspaper called The News Argus and he argued that Gaines has to retire because of health issue.
