Sharyl started her reporting career in WUFT-TV as reported and later as an anchor for WTVX-TV in which she spent from 1982 to 1985. After that, she worked for The CBS Affiliate for a year than in WTVT from 1986 to 1990.
In 1990, Sharyl became an anchor in CNN and key anchor at the same time for CBS space exploration. Sharyl left CNN in 1993 and moved to CBN where she anchored CBS News Up to The Minute. The smart journalist also part of the Journalism College Advisory Board in the University of Florida from 1993 to 1997 and the board’s chair. The University gave her an award in 1997. She also co-authored a college textbook: Writing Right for Broadcast and Internet News.
In Sharyl’s early years in CBN, she has earned multiple awards already. In 2000, Sharyl received an Investigative Reporters and Editors Finalist award for Dangerous Drugs. The following year, she received a nomination in Emmy Award for Firestone Tire Fiasco.
Then in 2002, she won the Emmy Award for Investigative Journalism presented in New York. The award is for her report about the American Red Cross. The journalist was also part of the team who got RTNDA-Edward R. Murrow Awards in 2008. Then a year after that, an Investigative Emmy Award for Business and Financial Reporting was awarded to her for reporting about the bank bailout and Troubled Asset Relief Program. She left CBS in 2014.

The books Attkisson authored were published: Harassment in Obama's Washington and Intimidation and Stonewalled. These books were New York Times bestseller. The book titled The Smear was released in 2017.
