Erbe started her career while in college. She starred in the sitcom ‘Chicken Soup’ and then later joined Steppenwolf Theater Company where she met her husband Terry Kinney. She starred in a film directed by her husband in a 1997 production of ‘A Steercar Named Desire’. The two also worked together on the HBO TV show titled ‘Oz’. As a member of Steppenwolf, she starred in many of their productions. Some of these are Curse of the Starving lass and The Grapes of Wrath. Erbe earned a Tony Awards nomination for her portrayal in the Speed of Darkness as Mary in 1991.

Kathryn got her breakthrough when she played Detective Alexander Eames in 'Law and order: Criminal Intent', a role she played from 2001 to 2010. Her second pregnancy was incorporated into the storyline of Law and Order by portraying the character of a surrogate mother. 

Later, she left the Law and Order and went on to play various films and TV series but she was able to reprise her role in the later seasons through guest appearances in 2012 as well as in 2013. Thereafter, she played a role in ‘Worst Friends’ in 2014. On the same year, she was cast in an episode of ‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’.
