The actor graduated from high school in 2005. His father wanted him to enroll at UCLA. But Simmons wanted to go into acting. He told his father if he could not land a role in the next year, he would get into UCLA. However, Simmons went to one of California’s community college for a degree in chemistry.

He was cast for the role on the spot. The movie was My Ambition which was released at Director’s Cut Film Festival on 14th May 2006. It was in 2007 that he got his first big role. Simmons played the character of Dylan Baxter, in the 2007 film Evan Almighty which also starred big names such as Morgan Freeman, Steve Carell, Lauren Goodman, and others. After this Simmons went on to do a number of films and tv projects.

John worked in movies such as Frank Miller’s The Spirit in 2008, where he played the character of young Denny Colt. His next big break was as the character Chip Dove in the 2009 film Jennifer’s Body. It was a supernatural horror movie with dark comedy. He also worked on films like The Greatest in 2009, Hotel for Dogs in 2009, The Perks of Being a Wallflower in 2012, 21 Jump Street in 2012 as well as Dreamland in 2016.
