Al Trautwig

Alan or Al Trautwig as he is commonly referred to is a celebrated sports commentator and TV host who works with numerous news reporting giants such as ABC, NBC, MSG network etc. Although Trautwig predominantly hosts football shows, he has also done commentatory and covered for a diverse range of sports such as cycling, tennis, gymnastics etc.


The acclaimed host is also a winner of multiple Emmy awards, apart from many other prestigious awards. He has also been in NBC’S Olympics broadcasting team for almost 16 years. Trautwig is touted as one of the most popular and in-demand sports commentators of all times.

PERSONAL LIFE:

Trautwig was born on February 26th, 1956 in Long Island. As a child, he used to work as a stick boy for two teams- namely New York Islanders and New York Nets. He attended the H. Frank Carey Junior-Senior High School in New York. He pursued his higher studies in Adelphi University in Long Island, where he is also became a member of the University’s Sports Hall of Fame. While in college he called local soccer games for a radio station run by the University students.

Trautwig started his mainstream sports casting career in 1979 with WMCA radio and continued to work in a couple more radio stations before taking up a job with USA network. During his initial days in radio he predominantly did the calling for soccer games. He is married to Cathy Trautwig and the couple has a son named Alex Trautwig. The family currently lives in Long island.

CAREER:

Trautwig’s famed career has a humble beginning. He started off as a stick boy for a few popular New York soccer teams. Graduating from Adelphi University gave him a huge breakthrough to venture into sports broadcasting. He was a member of the prestigious Sports Hall of Fame in the institution. He debuted as a radio sports host for the station WMCA radio where he did the calling for New York Apollo soccer. He eventually called several other New York based soccer teams for Sports phone, Cosmo Radio, WPIX and Sports channel.

In 1980, the acclaimed host was hired by USA network where he did around 500 sportscasts. In 1989, Trautwig joined MSG and has been a regular in the network, since then. He currently hosts for the Rangers and Knicks. Trautwig, has also to his credit hosted the Emmy winning “MSG’s Vault” which analyses the most legendary moments in the history of Madison square making use of their extensive archives.

Besides this, the presenter has also hosted the renowned Tour De France cycling Championships and has been a part Olympics broadcasting team of NBC for 16 years. Starting from 2000, Trautwig has also been hosting the Olympics women’s gymnastics event. He ran into a lot of trouble and received massive flak for his inappropriate comments on star gymnast Simon Biles regarding her adoptive parents. He is often criticised for stereotyping women’s gymnastics. Besides his stellar sports casting record on TV, Trautwig has also starred in a couple of feature films namely “Eddie” alongside Whoopi Goldberg and “Cool Runnings”
