Laurence was born in the New York City on 1 October 1966.  His full name is Laurence Paul Shanet.  His mother Bernice Grafstein Shanet was a Neurophysiologist and father Howard Shane was a conductor and a composer. He has completed his high schooling from the Bronx High School of Science. Shanet has a degree in Creative Writing, Media Arts and Psychology from the Johns Hopkins University here he developed his writing skills.


He was also part of the New York University’s commercial film directing program. Laurence and David M. Rosenthal who is his partner in Directing initially worked under the name Kranky till their series ‘Master Cabbie’ of spots.  Master Cabbie was nominated for the London International Advertising Awards in 2003. Since their separation, Laurence is using Kranky as his Brand and production name. He was listed among the Boards magazine’s ‘Top 10 Directors To Watch’. Shanet is also honoured with the Regional Addy Award under Television Campaign category and Regional Addy Award for ‘Best of Show’ in 2006. Shanet is famous for his commercial work. Many commercials like Starburst, H&R Block, Visa, Disney, Powerball Lotto, KFC, Airheads Xtremes, Skittles and MR. SUB are directed by Shanet.

Prior to his directorial career Shanet was an award-winning writer and a producer for some of the top advertising agencies like Amster Yard, McCann Erickson, Kirshenbaum & Bond, Leo Burnett, Berlin Cameron, Campbell, RSY and Dweck. With his remarkable work, Laurence along with his working partner David M. Rosenthal has bagged the Young Director Award at the Cannes Lions International Festival in 2004 for the team Kranky. His work is still placed in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent audio-visual collection.

His other directorial honours include Cannes Lions, AICP/MOMA, Clio, One Show, London International Advertising Award and TELLY Award. Laurence Shanet is a highly successful director. Apart from commercials, advertisements and films, he has also directed music videos, internet content and stage plays. Shanet a son of a composer is also equally famous for his entertainment work along with his advertisement projects.

One of his comedy short films was taken for making a television series on the major cable network. The film was about a taxi driver training academy. He has also contributed as a ghost writer for some famous comedy TV series. He was the head co-creator and writer of ‘Badtime Stories’ which is a famous animated series from 2002. He has directed a famous Off-Broadway show ‘Connections’, which is a comedy show about internet dating which is a very popular play among the people.   His ‘Minnesota State Lottery’ was nominated for the London International Advertising Award in 2007 under the entertainment category.

He is married to his long-time girlfriend Alyssa Sutherland who is an Australian supermodel and an actress on Natai Beach in Thailand. Till date couple doesn’t have any child.
