Johnny Mathis

Johnny Mathis, born John Royce “Johnny” Mathis on 30th September 1935 has been a U.S. singer. His catalog of singing includes Brazilian, Traditional Pop, Spanish, Rhythm and Blues, Soul, Show Tunes, Soft Rock, Blues, Country, Tin Pan Alley, and some disco songs. In short, he sang popular songs. During the initial stages of his career, he started with singles and became popular due to a number of albums that achieved platinum or gold status.


Personal Life

Johnny was born in Gilmer, Texas, USA. He was born to Mildred Boyd and Clem Mathis. He has six siblings and is fourth among his parents’ seven children. Later, his parents shifted to San Francisco where he spent his childhood days. He was very much influenced by his father who helped him learn several types of routines and songs. His nationality is American while her ethnicity is African-American.

As for his education, he joined George Washington High School, San Francisco. Next, he joined San Francisco State College where he received a scholarship on athletics. Initially, he intended to be a physical trainer or English teacher, but his fate willed something else.

He has since been in a number of relationships so far in life. First, he has been in a relationship with Regina Belle, a U.S. Vocalist. His relationship with her lasted for only a brief period. After that he was in a relationship with another girl named Estelle Bennett, an American Musician. He was also in a relationship with George Avakian for a brief period. He also dated Mitch Miller, an American Conductor.

Patti Austin, an American Singer, dated Johnny for some time. Recently, he is reported to be dating Deniece Williams, an American Vocalist. Though he has been in several relationships, none could convert into marriage. Thus, Johnny has not married as yet and is single. Since he has not married as yet, he has not divorced anyone.

Career

Johnny drew the attention of Helen Noga, the co-founder of the club Black Hawk Club where he was singing. Being very much impressed by Johnny’s singing, Helen agreed to become his music manager. He entered into an agreement with Columbia while continuing his studies in San Francisco. Meanwhile, a plan was afoot in New York to release his first album. The first album he released was entitled “Johnny Mathis: A New Sound in Popular Song”.

He also acted in a television show entitled “The Ed Sullivan Show” in the year 1957. He released several albums all of which were immensely popular. It was due to his immense popularity that millions of his records got sold in no time.

He was bestowed upon a Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame due to his versatility in music. He also got the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences’ Lifetime Achievement Award. Additionally, he was also awarded the Society of Singers’ Ella Award. Further, he is associated with the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame, and Pop Music Hall of Fame as a member. His net worth is estimated at $400 million.
