David Foster

Short Biography

David Walter Foster is a Canadian music executive, composer, record producer, musician, arranger, and songwriter. The prolific producer has produced for several musicians such as Alice Cooper, Toni Braxton, Rod Stewart, Kenny Rogers, Jennifer Lopez, Madonna Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, Brandy Norwood, Michael Jackson, and Cherry Lynn. David has won sixteen Grammy Awards to his credit and 47 Grammy nominations which further proves his achievement in the music industry. Foster is vast in music and does pop, rock, pop rock, classical, gospel and R&B. Foster is also not just a vocalist but also plays the piano, keyboard, French horn, and synthesizer.


He was born on the 1st of November 1949 in Victoria. The name of his father is Maurice Foster while his mother is known as Eleanor May Foster. Foster started music early in his life because at the tender age of thirteen, he started to learn music at the University of Washington.

David Foster's Career

Two years after enrolling in the University of Washington, he attended an audition for the position of a bandleader in a nightclub. Tommy Banks, the owner of the nightclub, finally became a mentor to Foster teaching him all he needed to know about the business of music. Afterward, he relocated to Los Angeles in 1974 with his music group, Skylark. Upon moving to Los Angeles, the band was dissolved but Foster decided to stay put in Los Angeles. Here, he formed another band with Jay Graydon. As a keyboardist, he enacted George Harrison's album in 1975. Foster also produced the following albums for The Tubes, The Completion Backward Principle (1981), Outside Inside (1983). Foster contributed immensely to Chicago's career in the 1980s. In 1984, he worked on Kenny Roger's album, What About Me (1984) and The Heart of the Matter (1985).

As a music producer, Foster has produced debut albums for Josh Groban in 2001, Michael Buble in 2003, Renee Olstead in 2004 and Charice in 2010. Apart from the music industry, Foster has also made appearances on several television programs and series. They include The Princes of Malibu (2005), The Real housewives of Beverly Hills (2012) among others. Foster has also been a judge on talent shows such as Nashville Star (2006), Celebrity Duets (2006), and Asia's Got Talent (2015, 2017). In 2012, Foster attained his position as the Chairman of Verve Records and left in 2016 due to a label restructuring

David Foster's Personal Life, Marriage and Divorces

The renowned music practitioner has quite a complicated personal life. He has been married four times and gone through four divorce cases, with his last wife being Yolana Hadid. Foster has five daughters out of his marriages and seven grandchildren. These five daughters are his biological children while there are others who are not his biological children. He married B.J. Cook first, Rebecca Dyer (1982-1986), Linda Thompson (1991-2005), and Yolanda Hadid (2011-2015). Recently, in 2018, he got engaged to Katharine McPhee.
