Cillian Murphy was born on 25 May, 1976 in Douglas. He was raised in Ballintemple in the family of educators. His mother was French teacher and father Brendan, works for the Irish Department of Education. He attended the Catholic school Presentation Brothers College because was raised as Roman Catholic. In the 1996, Murphy began studying law at University College Cork, but he failed.


He began his star career as rock musician by writing a song from age of 10. After that he becomes a stage actor with debut in the play “Disco Pigs” in the 1996. He also takes part in others plays like “The Shape of Things”, “The Seagull” and “Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing”. Opposite his stage work Cillian was involved in some independent projects like horror movie “28 Days Later” or “On the Edge”. Murphy moved from Cork, to Dublin for continuing acting career. In Dublin he got a role of soldier in the movie by William Boyd “The Trench” about the Battle of the Somme, it was released in the 1999. For a few years he was involved in projects like “Sunburn”, “Eviction”, “The Tale of Sweety Barrett” and “A Man of Few Words”.

In the 2001 he moved to London. He got the role of Gus in the movie “How Harry Became a Tree”. The same year he was involved in mini-series project “The Way We Live Now” and movies like “On the Edge” and “Disco Pigs”. Murphy played the lead role in the film “The Wind That Shakes the Barley” in 2006, which was directed by Ken Loach. At the same year he starred in the film about the Irish War of Independence. He also starred as a physicist-astronaut in the science fiction movie “Sunshine” in the 2007. He also appeared in the hero film “The Dark Knight” - the sequel to “Batman Begins”, which released in 2008.

In the 2010 Cillian played along with Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page in the blockbuster “Inception”. In the 2011 he appeared in action thriller movie “In time” along with Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried, where he played timekeeper Raymond Leon. The following year, he appeared in “Red Lights” starring Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver. He also performed in the stage drama, “Misterman”. For the last years Murphy appeared in the movie of 2015 “In the Heart of the Sea” with role of Matthew Joy. He also played Josef Gabcík in the thriller “Anthropoid” in the 2016.

Cillian was awarded in the 2002 by Ourense Independent Film Festival Award as Best Actor. He is two times winner of Irish Film & Television Award for movies “Misterman” and “Breakfast on Pluto” in the 2007 and 2012. He also was nominated for Golden Globe award. He was married to Yvonne McGuinness in the 2004. He met his future wife in 1996 on some of his band concert. She is an artist. They welcomed two sons Malachy and Carrick Murphy. Murphy lives with his Family in Monkstown, Dublin. He prefers not to speak about his personal life. Cillian Murphy has a net worth of 15 million dollars.
