Background
Yasmin Sewell was born in the late 1970s in Sydney, Australia. She grew up in the suburbs of Randwick with a Lebanese-Australian family. There is no information about her parents and siblings as well as about her early years. She was very passionate and serious about her dreams. She knew that she would eventually find a career in fashion. She has made a serious decision at the age of 16 when she left her school and dropped out. She started her life as a working young adult when she was hired as a PA for the established Sydney property agency, “McGrath”.
Fashion Career
When she was 20 years old, she moved to London. She has made this decision because of her marriage to an English actor. She had a dream with little financial backing and no experience in fashion or retail but she wasn’t going to let anything stop her. She finally opened her Soho fashion boutique “Yasmin Cho” when she was rising to the top.
In 2012, she revealed in an interview for Fairfax Media that it was a disadvantage being an Australian in London. She also added, “It’s funny to remember, because I had a shaved head, as well as an accent and was surrounded by these British ladies. Now I look at my business and career here in London and realize how much it has changed for the last years”.
She gave all of herself for her dream, she said “I wasn’t even thinking about sales… I just went for it, and as a result it had a lot of integrity and people loved it”.
Her boutique “Yasmin Cho” was chosen by The New York Times as “one of the most influential boutiques in the world”. During her amazing career, she used innovative new faces and key trends as well as stocking designers such as Gaspard Yurkievich and Rick Owens. She helped launch their careers this way along with many other upcoming fashion designers.
Sewell was chosen by legendary retail maven Joan Burstein in 2005 to be the head buyer for the ultra-elegant department store, "Browns". In 2008, Yasmin branched out and set up her own consultancy. Her flagship project was the creation of the much-loved yet unprofitable British department store, Liberty.
As Roger Leong said, she has been successful because she has a strong instinct for spotting trends and new designers. She is unafraid to take risks and works very hard for all of her success. Now she is known as a fashion consultant. She is also a charming lady on the top of the international fashion tree. She is now working with some of the biggest names in the fashion business like Mulberry, Maje, Hermès and Westfield. Additionally, she is an owner of the sports luxe label, Être Cécile and she has worked as fashion director of Style.com.
Personal Life
She was married to Rufus Frederik Sewell, who is known as an actor. They got married in 1999 but their marriage only lasted two weeks.
