Leland was chasing the fugitive rapist Luster and apprehended him on 18th June 2003 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; which led to charges against Leland for kidnapping. Leland was arrested and imprisoned for a short while, but posted bail after just a few days. He never returned to Mexico, though, for the court hearing. However, where this story falls short is, by the time the divorce hearing began, Leland was already out of prison. Thus, the advantage that Maui had in her case, was lost.

Leland was then instructed to counteract with relinquishment that means his wife abandoned him during the process of filing for divorce. Maui cited that, in all honesty, the grounds of confinement in prison seemed like quite a decent motivation for one to leave a marriage. During the divorce hearings, Maui was granted custody of the couple’s children. This was due to Leland’s stretch in the Mexican prison, which wrecked his image in front of the court, and caused him to be declared as an unfit father. Leland was, however, granted visiting rights by the court. Yet another story that floated in the media regarded Leland’s secret extramarital affairs. However, these rumors were never verified. Leland and Maui were divorced on April 25, 2005.
Although Leland had always kept his dating status secret he eventually moved on and had a publicized affair with Lynette Yi. During an interview, Leland stated that he was happy with his divorce with his first wife and that he plans on taking all the responsibilities for his children.
