Marsha Mason was born on April 3, 1942 in St. Louis, Missouri. Her parents were Jacqueline Helena (nee Rakowski) and James Joseph Mason. She is of Irish and English ancestry by her father. She also has a sister named Linda. She was raised in Crestwood. She studied at the Nerinx Hall High School. Afterwards, she enrolled in the Webster University. She also studied drama at HB Studio in Greenwich Village in New York City.


She started her career in the late 60s. Her debut role was in the film “Beyond the Law”, where she played Marcia Stillwell. In the 1969 Marsha appeared in the TV series “Dark Shadows” by playing a vampire girl Audrey. In the 1971 she participated in both TV series “Where the Heart Is” and “Love of Life”. The next year she appeared in another project “Young Dr. Kildare” with a role of Nurse Lord.

She got her breakthrough role in the movie “The Goodbye Girl”, where she portrayed the character of Paula McFadden and later was nominated by Academy Award. In the next year she played the role of Georgia Merkle in the film “The Cheap Detective”. She played Dr. Alexandra Kendall in the drama film “Promises in the Dark”.

In the 1979 she also was involved in the movie “Chapter Two” with the role of Jennie MacLaine. She appeared as Nora McPhee in the 1983 film “Max Dugan Returns”. In the 1986 she took a place in the TV project “Trapped in Silence”, where she played Jennifer Hubbell. She also tried herself as a director with a several episodes of “CBS Schoolbreak Special”.

In the 1995 she appeared in the movie “Nick of Time” as a Governor Eleanor Grant. In the next year she played the role of Audrey Hopper in “2 Days in the Valley”. In the 2004 she appeared in the Indian romantic drama film “Bride and Prejudice”.

During her incredible career, she achieved numerous of award, including Golden Globe Award in the 1974 and 1978 as well as St. Louis International Film Festival award. She also was nominated with Academy Awards four times. According to imdb site, she has more than 48 credits as an actress during her career.

She was married twice. Her first husband was Gary Campbell. The couple exchanged their vows in the 1965. Their marriage was pretty short and five years later they decided to divorce. She was married for the second time to Neil Simon. Her husband is a famous screenwriter, whom she met during the cast of a Broadway play. The couple got to divorce in the 1983.

She additionally was involved in growing organic herbs and later launched her own line of wellness and bath and body products, which was called "Resting in the River".
