Born on December 4, 1964, to father Gary A. Tomei and mother Patricia Adelaide Tomei in Brooklyn, New York, Marisa Tomei grew up in Brooklyn with her younger brother named Adam Tomei, who is also an actor. She did her schooling from the Andries Hudde Junior High School and then went on to graduate from Edward R. Murrow High School and completed her studies in the year 1982. Her interest in acting was ignited at a very young age only, and she used to participate in a lot of plays during her school days. She then went on to attend the Boston University but left the course for her acting career. After one year in college, she was cast for the portrayal of Marcy Thompson on the show As the World Turns in the year 1983.


She got her film debut just a year after she began working in As the World Turns. She was cast to portray a small role of a waitress in the movie The Flamingo Kid in the year 1984. She also went on to do another television series in 1987 named A Different World where the portrayed the role of Maggie Lauten.

The turning point in her career was when she was cast for the role of Mona Lisa Vito in the movie My Cousin Vinny in 1992 which helped her gain a lot of appreciation and critical acclaim. It was this movie which helped her establish the foundation of her international acting career. With a career spanning about three decades, Tomei has appeared in a large number of movies like Playing for Keeps in 1986 where she played the role of Tracy, Oscar in 1991 as Lisa Provolone, Chaplin in 1992 as Mabel Normand, Untamed Heart in 1993 as Caroline, Only You in 1994 as Faith Corvatch, Four Rooms in 1995 as Margaret, Unhook the Stars in 1996 as Monica Warren, Happy Accidents in 2000 as Ruby Weaver, In The Bedroom in 2001 as Natalie Strout, The Wrestler in 2008 as Cassidy, Crazy, Stupid, Love in 2011 as Kate, Train Wreck in 2015 as the dog owner , etc. to name a few. She was seen recently in the 2016 movie Captain America: Civil War as Aunt May.

She has also been the part of many television shows like Only Love, The Simpsons and Empire. She has also worked in several plays like Daughters in 1986, The Comedy of Errors as Adriana, Dark Rupture in 1996, Top Girls in 2008 and The Realistic Joneses in 2014. Tomei is the recipient of Oscar, Golden Globe as well as many other awards.

There has been a lot of talks about her personal life. She was in a relationship with Logan Marshall Green in 2008, but the couple parted ways in 2013. She then started dating Robert Downey Jr., but this relationship also ended soon. In an interview, Tomei said that she was not ready for getting married or having a husband and children yet.
