Born in the year 1973 on 17th June, to father Vece Paes and mother Jennifer Paes, in Calcutta situated in West Bengal in India, Leander Adrian Paes spent the better half of his childhood days growing up in Calcutta. He was enrolled as a student at the La Martiniere School situated in his hometown. After this, he decided to complete his education from the St. Xavier’s College in Calcutta. He got his sportsman skills from his parents as they were also sportsperson which inspired him more to pursue sports as a career. He was clear about his ambitions from a very young age and decided to be a part of the Britannia Amritraj Tennis Academy which is situated in Madras in Chennai, India in the year 1985. He became an excellent player of tennis under the guidance of his coach Dave O’Meara and was able to win the Wimbledon Junior title as a teenager.

He started his professional tennis career in 1991 and went on to win several titles which ensured his first rank in the world. In 1992, he decided to team up with Ramesh Krishnan and participated in the Olympics of 992 which was held in Barcelona. They played really well but got out during the quarter finals. During the Olympics in the year 1996 which was held in Atlanta, he was able to secure a bronze medal. For his performance in the match, he was the recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna ward in that year.
It was in the year 1996 when he decided to make Mahesh Bhupathi his partner and this partnership became one of the best partnerships in the world. Together they were able to become the runner-ups of the US Open in 1997 and Paes was able to secure the 14th position in that year. They were also able to win the Wimbledon as well as the French Open in the year 1999. He also was able to secure the first position in the doubles ranking in the same year. In 2001, he became the recipient of the Padmashri award.
In the following year, their partnership was able to emerge victorious in the Asian Games. In 2009, he was declared the winner of the French Open. In the year 2010, he again went on to win the mixed doubles of the Australian Open. In 2012, he decided to pair with Elena Vesnina and they were able to become the runner-ups in the Wimbledon in that year. In 2013, he was able to win the US Open and was awarded the Padma Bhushan for his performance. He became the winner mixed doubles in the French Open in 2016.
Talking about the personal aspect of his life, he was in a relationship with Mahima Chaudhary, but the relationship ended after some time. He then started dating Rhea Pillai who was the wife of Sanjay Dutt and they are proud parents of a daughter. They got separated after some time and Leander is still not married.
