Kyra Sedgwick was born on August 19, 1965 in New York City, New York, United States to Patricia Rosenwald, a speech teacher and family therapist, and Henry Dwight Sedgwick V, a venture capitalist. She considers herself to be a Jewish. Her brother is an actor Robert Sedgwick. Unfortunately, her parents separated when she was 4. Sedgwick entered Friends Seminary and attended Sarah Lawrence College. She transferred to the University of Southern California, where she graduated with a theater degree.

At the age of 16 Kyra Sedgwick appeared on the popular television soap opera Another World. It was her debut on the big screen in her biography and became a professional actress. In 1988 she was given a role in a TV version of Lanford Wilson's Lemon Sky. After that success she appeared in several famous and well-known Hollywood films, including Singles (1992), Heart and Souls (1993), Something to Talk About (1995) and Phenomenon (1996), in which she acted as the girlfriend of John Travolta's character.
