Kristen Welker was born on July 1, 1976 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Harvey and Julie Welker. Her father was an engineer and her mother a real estate agent. Her father was a White American and her mother was an African American, so she belongs with mixed ethnicity. She attended Germantown Friends School and graduated from there in the 1994. After school she joined Harvard College with a major in history. In addition she also studied the Spanish language in Madrid on a Rotary Scholarship. She got her Bachelor of Arts degree with an honor by graduating in the 1998.

At the late of 1990s, Kristen joined and worked for several years on ABC affiliates WLNE-TV in Providence, Rhode Island. Welker started her career of correspondent in Broadcast Media in the 2001 as a reporter for KRCR. During the years 2003 - 2005, she continued by working as a reporter for KRCR-TV in Redding/Chico, California and WLNE-ABC6 NEWS in Providence, Rhode Island. She joined NBC affiliate WCAU in 2005 and worked as an anchor and reporter for four years. Opposite to her career at NBC, she also was the reporter for the WCAU-TV (NBC). In 2008, Welker was nominated for two Mid-Atlantic Emmy awards. Several years from 2009 she jointed to NBC Universal, Burbank Bureau as NBC News Correspondent.
She has achieved huge level of fame in the 2011, when she was named the NBC White House correspondent by working along with President Obama, Vice President Biden and First Lady Michelle Obama and travelling around the world since that time. She also was covered the Obama administration and during the 2012 presidential campaign. Kristen’s reports appeared across all platforms of NBC News channel, including “NBC Nightly News,” “Today,” “Meet the Press,” MSNBC and NBCNews.com. She also was rated number four on the 2014 list of the fifty “most beautiful” people in politics by “The Hill” website.
Currently she resides in Washington, D.C. and working for NBC news, in the division of the American broadcast network NBC and serves as a White House correspondent based in Washington.
She had some problems with her health, and lost for a while her smell sense, it was a sinus infection. After a follow-up surgery, she regained her sense of smell but only up to 90 percent. She also is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
She is not married yet. Kristen and her boyfriend John Hughes has romantically dating more than two years. Welker and Hughes met on a blind date. She got engaged with him in the 2016. She said yes in the middle of a Washington DC street. Now the couple has planned to marry soon. Her future husband is a marketing director at Merck in the Philadelphia area.
