Joseph Gordon Levitt was born in the year 1981 on February 17th in Los Angeles, California. He did not stay in Los Angeles for long and moved with his family to Sherman Oaks. He has received a Jewish upbringing from childhood as his forefathers were the descendants of Lithuania, Russia, Romania and Poland. His parents, Jane Gordon and Dennis Levitt worked as active social workers and also founded the Progressive Jewish Alliance. His father worked as a news director of a popular radio station, Pacifica, KPFK-FM. His mother was a political team member of the United States Congress. She stood with the Peace and Freedom Party.
Though any of his parents did not belong to the glamour industry, his grandparents had a vast history of acting. He went to the Van Nuys High School in his city. He had much interest in drama and theatres from a very early age and also participated in many cultural dramas and inter-school competitions. He has also won several trophies and awards through his major stage performances. Previously, when he was only four years old, he had worked with a popular musical theatre group with the production of The Wizard of Oz.
