Personal Life

According to her biography, Elizabeth McGovern was born in the city of Evanston, situated in the state of Illinois of the United States, on the date 18th July 1961, with the name Elizabeth Lee McGovern given to her. Her father, William Montgomery McGovern Jr., worked as a professor while her mother, Katherine Wolcott, worked as a teacher in a high school.

Elizabeth grew up with her younger sister, Cammie, who became a novelist. She has an extremely established family heritage with her ancestors working in many reputed fields. The actress is Jewish by religion as she was brought up in a Jewish household. She had to move to Los Angeles when she was very young because her father accepted the job, to work as a professor, at the University of Columbia (UCLA).

Elizabeth did her schooling at the acting school of the American Conservatory Theatre, situated in San Francisco. She completed her graduation from the New York City’s Julliard School, in the year 1981. She has once been engaged to the actor, Sean Penn, who was her co-star in a movie, but their engagement broke off. She then got married to Simon Curtis, who worked as a director and belonged to a British origin, in the year 1992. They have been happily married since then and they have two daughters together, named Grace and Matilda.

Career

After Elizabeth McGovern’s talent was discovered by the agent Joan Scott, while she was performing in a stage play, she suggested her to take classes and pursue a career in acting. While she was still at Julliard, Elizabeth got to star in her first big-screen movie “Ordinary People”, which released in 1980. She received her first Academy Award nomination, in the year 1981, for her supporting role in the movie “Ragtime”.

Her most epic role was in the movie “Once Upon A Time in America”, in the year 1984. The actress has worked opposite many extremely famous actors like Nicolas Cage, Sean Penn, and Michael Caine in movies like “Racing with the Moon”, “Lovesick”, and “A Shock to the System” in the 1980s and 1990s, for which she has earned extreme recognition amongst the masses. She has performed at various stage plays and her most famous works include her role as Ophelia in the play “Hamlet” which took place in the year 1992.

McGovern started her acting career in the television world by working in many UK based television shows, in the 2000s. She has done many short roles in famous TV shows like “Law and Order” and “Men and Women”. The breakthrough in her television acting career occurred when she landed the role of Lady Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham, in the British television drama “Downtown Abbey”, in the year 2010 and continued it till 2015.

Elizabeth was nominated for the Emmy Award for this role as it was exceptional. The actress has also been a part of the band “Sadie and the Hotheads”, for whom she used to write and sing songs in the year 2008. Her net worth is estimated to be around 4 million US dollars.
