Personal Life
According to her biography, Chrissie Hynde took birth in the city of Akron, situated in the United States’ state of Ohio, on the date 7th September 1951, with the name Christine Ellen Hynde given to her. Her father, Melville Grant Hynde, worked as a manager at the Yellow Pages. She did her schooling from the Firestone High School, situated in Akron and she claimed that she went to high school because it allowed her the chance to attend various concerts in Cleveland. She always lived for music and her high school crushes could never distract her from her passion.
Chrissie developed an inclination towards mysticism and hippie culture during the time she was studying art at the art school of the Kent State University. She was caught as a victim in the shootings that took place at Kent but she got out it unharmed. The singer has been married twice till now but both of her marriages failed due to complications.
First, she was married to Jim Kerr (since 1984) and after it ended in 1990, she married Lucho Brieva in the year 1997 and it ended in 2002. She is a mother of 2 daughters, Natalie (with Ray Davies) and Yasmin (with Jim Kerr). She is a vegetarian by choice and she loves animals and supports their rights by working as an activist at PETA. She is an avid follower of Hinduism being a Vishnu devotee and she visits India every year.
Career
Chrissie Hynde started her career in music after she joined her first band “Sat. Sun. Mat.”, while she was still in art school. After graduation, she shifted to London in 1973 as she aspired to be a part of NME UK magazine and she landed a job at an architectural firm.
She left the firm after 8 months because she gained a contact at the NME, which allowed her to get a small writing job. The job there failed and she was left to work for a clothing line which was owned by her manager, Malcolm McLaren. As she desperately wanted to be a part of a band while she was in Europe, she wanted to extend her VISA but her attempts failed and she returned to Cleveland in 1975.
Chrissie jumped from one band to another to work at part-time gigs but none of the deals held up until she made her first tape in 1978 and submitted it to Dave Hill, the owner of Real Records label. He became her manager after listening to the tape and took the job of representing her through his label.
She founded the band “The Pretenders” in 1978 after her manager asked her to. The band released their first single in 1979 which was listed in the UK Top 30 Songs. The band hit fame in the mid-1990s and it was mentioned to be one of the most listened to rock bands of that time. They have done many live performances in events like “CMT Crossroads”.
