Born Raymond Julian Vicimarli on 18th December 1954, in Newark, New Jersey, to a Scottish mother and an Italian father. He was put up for adoption before his first birthday to Mary and Alfred Liotta who adopted him as Raymond Allen Liotta. Ray adoptive parents were both local politicians in Newark. Ray had his 9th to 12th-grade education at Union High School –a comprehensive community public high school in Union County, New Jersey.


In 1978, he proceeded to the University of Miami attaining a BSC in Fine arts. In late winter of 1997, Liotta married actress Michelle Grace –a teacher and actress, with whom he had his daughter Karsen Liotta in 1998. Their marriage was said to be troubled and they eventually secure a divorce in 2014, remaining single since then.

Career

Liotta moved to New York after college, securing a job as a bartender at the Shubert theatres –owned by The Shubert Organization, which is a theatrical producing organization, with ownership of major theatres in Manhattan, New York City. Working as a bartender at the Shubert theatres gave him his first acting exposure, landing a role within the first 6 months of his bartending. In 1978, he debuted as Joey Perrini in Another World -a soap opera, appearing for a straight 3 years.

Liotta moved to Los Angeles with interest in the film industry, earning his first role in a sexual assault scene in The Lonely Lady in 1983. In 1986, he earned his first Golden Globe award nomination with his first major acting role in Something Wild; acting as Ray Sinclair. His role as Shoeless Joe Jackson in 1989 Field of Dreams and as Henry Hill in 1990 Goodfellas shot him to the limelight.

He has since then, acted in over 100 films, about half the number in Television series, soap operas, music videos, and video games. His most recent appearances are as John Cullen in Kill the Messenger (2014), Bartender in Campus Code (2015) and Uncle Reed in Flock of Dudes (2016), Vincent in Young Sheldon and Morty Szyslak in The Simpsons.

Awards

In 1983, The Lonely Lady earned him the nomination for the Best Supporting actor by Boston Society of Film Critics. He was also nominated for several awards as the Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ray Sinclair in 1986 Something Wild, as the Best Villain in 1992 Unlawful Entry by MTV Movie Award among other nominations.

He was nominated most recently (for his role as Lorca in the series Texas Rising) by the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie. Liotta won the Glow Award for the best voice performance in 2003, won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama for his role as Charlie Metcalf in ER (2004). He also won the Spike video games award for best performance by a human in 2003.
