Jonathan Frederick "Jon" Tenney was born on the 16th of December, 1961 in Princeton, New Jersey, United States of America. His parents were associated with the science, his mother worked as an alienist and his father worked as a research physicist. Tenney is the youngest of four children. Jon attended Vassar College, where he got B.A. degree of drama and philosophy in 1984. Later, he and his Group 19 graduated from The Juilliard School's Drama Division.


Jon’s first debut as an actor happened in a tour, which had produced the Mike Nichols' The Real Thing. This time Tenney worked intensively on Broadway and other places, and also in the theater of region. During the work in New York there were such credits like Biloxi Blues, The Substance of Fire and The Heiress. Tenney’s television working debut started when he starred in various short-lived series, among which there were Steven Bochco's Brooklyn South, Kristin Chenoweth's sitcom Kristin, and guest appearances on Will & Grace, Murphy Brown, Spenser: for Hire and Get Real. Soon, these series with Tenney were canceled on all four major networks.

For seven years, Tenney was playing Special Agent Fritz Howard, whose wife was Brenda Leigh Johnson in TNT's The Closer. Since 2014, he also played Howard in its new show Major Crimes, in the third season of which Agent Fritz became an LAPD deputy chief. Later, he performed a role of Dr. Simon Craig, with whom Nora Walker felt in love (Sally Field) in Brothers & Sisters. In 2013, he and Rebecca Romijn were invited as guest stars in TNT's King & Maxwell, as Sean King, who was in the past a Secret Service agent and attorney, working as a secret investigator. Only one season after, the series were canceled.

In 2014, he was shooting in a role on Shonda Rhimes' drama series Scandal. Jonathan also was seen in some films, such as like the villainous CEO of Benbrook Oil Company in Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home and the friend of Alex Whitman (Matthew Perry) in Fools Rush In. Moreover, he participated in small roles for several films, like Tombstone, Beverly Hills Cop III, Nixon, Music from Another Room and the 2009 horror film remake of The Stepfather. Tenney also played in John Cameron Mitchell's film, Rabbit Hole. In 2011, he played a role of Martin Jordan in the superhero film Green Lantern.
