Virginia G. Madsen was born on the 11th of September, 1961 in Chicago, Illinois, United States of America. Her parents, a filmmaker Elaine Madsen and a firefighter Calvin Madsen, were happy to welcome their daughter. When she was a little girl, her parents divorced. As to the siblings, she has two of them: Cheryl Madsen, an entrepreneur, and Michael Madsen, an actor. There were also some Danish, English, Irish, Scottish, German and other nationality among her ancestors.

While being a child, Virginia attended the New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois. During the formative years, she was interested in arts, so she studied at the Ted Liss Acting Studio in Chicago and at Harand Camp Adult Theater Seminar in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. At the age of 22, Madsen started her acting career. It was a role of Lisa in the teen sex comedy “Class”. Later she was seen in Kenny Loggins' music video for "I'm Free" from the Footloose soundtrack. In 1984, she played a cellist named Madeline in “Electric Dreams”. Two years after, she starred as Boris' love interest Barbara in “Creator”.
In 1986, she got much more fame after her role of a Catholic schoolgirl who fell in love with a prison boy in the movie “Fire with Fire”. In 1988, she took part in the comedy film “Hot to Trot” and in the final season of “Moonlighting”. Four years later, she was a star in the horror film “Candyman”.
Virginia also participated in the Francis Ford Coppola drama “The Rainmaker”. After appearing in “Sideways”, Madsen was put onto the Hollywood A-list. Her next leading role was in the movie “Firewall”. She was also seen in such movies as “Dangerous Woman”, “The Astronaut Farmer”, “Ripple Effect”, “Diminished Capacity”, “The Haunting in Connecticut”, “Father of Invention”, “The Magic of Belle Isle”, “The Hot Flashes”, “All the Wilderness” and others.
