From her Biography, Paula Deen was born in the city of Albany in Georgia as Paula Ann Hiers. She is a daughter of Earl Wayne Hiers and Corrie A Hiers. She was raised up as a Baptist and she is still devoted into her faith. The parents died before she became 23 years old and she got married but the marriage ended up in the divorce.
In her 20s, she was suffering agoraphobia and panic attacks. She started to cook for her family since it was something that was easy for her to do without the need to leave the house. Irene Paul, her grandmother taught her about the hand-me-down art gotten from Southern cooking and the only way she was feeling safe is to be near her stove making dumplings and chickens. Afterwards, she moved to live in Savannah in Georgia.
In the year 1989, she divorced Jimmy Deen her first husband and they were married since 1965. She had only 200 dollars and it was hard to raise her kids with her young brother called Earl. She worked in many jobs like selling insurance and real estate, being a bank teller and hanging wallpapers. Afterwards, she started a catering service by making the meals and sandwiches while her sons Bobby and Jamie were delivering them.
Her home business, called The Bag Lady, outgrew her kitchen in few months and then moved to live in Best Western at the Southside of Savannah at Abercoom Street in the year 1991 and opened a restaurant named The Lady in the year 1996. She opened the Lady and Sons in the downtown Savannah at the West Congress Street. The restaurant was named to be International Meal of the Year in the year 1999. The specialty was a buffet from the Southern called comfort foods. Each buffet included the Salad bar and a desert. Her sons are the one managing the restaurant and it has become popular in the tourists who visit Savannah.
She has written two books that feature Southern recipes; they are The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cooking together with The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cooking 2.
