Personal life
Franka Potente was born on 22nd July, 1974 in Munster, West Germany to parents Dieter and Hildegard Potent. Her father was a teacher while her mother was a medical assistant. She is of Sicilian descent. Like her surname suggests, Franka does have Italian roots since her great-grandfather was an Italian who immigrated to Germany. She speaks fluent English, French and German. She loves to play violin and flute.
At age 17, Franka spent some time as an exchange student in Houston, Texas. She got into a relationship with an American guy with whom she attended football games and prom nights. She recalls being so serious about him that she brought him home to Germany to introduce him to her parents. Franka began dating Tom Tykwer, an American director in 1998. They called off their love affair in 2003. Franka started dating famous actor Derek Richardson later on and married him in 2012. The couple has a daughter named Polly. Career
After graduating from high school, Franka Potente enrolled at the Otto Falckenberg School of Performing Arts, which is based in Germany. To create a balance between studies and acting, Franka kept doing acting jobs outside school hours and appeared in her debut film in ‘Aufbruch’ in 1995. She caught the attention of a casting agent and was given an opportunity to cast in ‘Nach Funf im Urwald’, a German film which was directed by Hans Christian Schmid. In this film, Franka enacted as a 17-year-old girl who runs away from her home with her boyfriend to seek freedom. She was given the prestigious Bavarian Film Award for ‘Young Talent’ for this film.
After a few years struggling in the film industry, Franka returned back to Europe and worked in French and German films. She got her big break in ‘Lola Rennt’ after she met director Tom Tykwer. Franka received high appreciations from the public for this film. Following her success in ‘Lola Rennt’, Franka starred in ‘Downhill City’ in 1999, directed by Hannu Salonen. She starred in a German film ‘Anatomy’ the following year as a medical student. ‘Anatomy’ was a huge success as well and it helped Franka’s career reach new heights.
Movies like ‘Lola Rennt’ and ‘Anatomy’ paved the way for a long acting journey for Franka Potente. She went on to star in over forty movies and fifteen television shows.
