America Ferrara was born in the year 1984 on April 18th. She was the sixth child of her parents Carlos Gregorio Ferrera and Griselda Ayes. She spent her childhood years in Los Angeles, California. She belonged from a middle class family background and both her parents worked. Her father was a service person and her mother worked as a staff in the housekeeping department. Her mother did not hold a degree and thus, she could not get a good job and always wanted to educate her children.
However due to the financial crisis, she could not provide good educational and livelihood facilities to all of her six children. Her father hardly contributed anything to the family and remained involved in extra marital affairs and different types of addictions. It affected her mental health and she became an introvert. Leading to these problems, her parents divorced and she had to move in with her father.
A few years later, when America’s father passed away, her mother took her away with her. She was affected by the situation and she went through an emotional crisis. As a child, she received education from the Calabash Street Elementary School in Woodland Hills. After this, she went to the George Ellery Hale Middle School and later, she was sent to the El Camino Real High School in Los Angeles.
Among all the children, she was the most beautiful and her mother always wanted to make her an actress. She sent her to the theatre school from an early age of seven only. She has appeared in several stage plays such as Romeo and Juliet, Oliver! Hamlet and many more before stepping in teenage. Later, she went to the University of California to pursue major in both international relations and theatre. She also got a scholarship from the university for her excellent performance.
America Ferrera started her career as an actress in the year 2002, in the film Gotta Kick It Up! Her appearance in the movie ‘Real Women Have Curves’ won her, a lot of appreciation. Besides, she also went forward with her television roles. She was seen in various supporting roles for the next few years which witnessed her career building process as an actress. From the year 2006, a turning point came in her career and she appeared in many major roles.
She was starred in many films including The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, Ugly Betty, The Dry Land, The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2, How to Train Your Dragon, Half the Sky : Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, Pedro & Maria and many more. Apart from this, she has also appeared in many talk shows and interviews and has also been in the pages of various popular magazines.
