Michael Barnicle popularly known as Mike Barnicle is an American journalist working for both print and for broadcasting media. He is also a political and social commentator. He was born on 13th October 1943 in Worcester at Massachusetts in USA. He is a graduate of Boston University in the 1965 batch. Colby College and University of Massachusetts Amherst have conferred upon him honorary degrees for his path breaking work. He is a guest host and frequent contributor to MSNBC’s shows like Morning Joe as well as Hardball.


He occasionally appears on the news segment of Today Show by NBC. He has also appeared in other programs such as Chronicle, PBS NewsHour, and 60 minutes. He is credited with writing approximately 4000 articles in various newspapers of repute such as New York Daily News, Boston Herald and Boston Globe. Mike is a regular contributor to TIME magazine, The Huffington Postand various sports magazines by HBO and ESPN. He has also hosted the radio show titled Barnicle’s View.

In the movie The Candidate which starred Robert Redford, he played a small role. It was during his visit to Redford’s house that he got an offer to write a column for the famous daily Boston Globe and his columns were published from 1973 to 1998. Mike’s article Busing Puts Burden on Working Class, Black and White which was in the 15th October 1974 edition of The Boston Globe won him the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. He also won the Pulitzer Prize in 1986 for writing the book Common Ground: A Turbulent Decade in the Lives of Three American Families.

In his career spanning more than thirty years, Barnicle has been a voice for various socio-economic issues plaguing the common man and has been a steady critic of various failed government policies. His work exemplified the struggles faced by common people to survive, sustain their families and struggles to carve out a living. For his work, Mike has received several awards and recognitions from universal press agencies such as Associated Press, National Headliners and United Press International. He has interviewed famous personalities such asSen. John Kerry, Sen. Ted Kennedy, Tom Menino and Thomas Tip O’ Neill.

In 1998, Mike was entangled in accusations of plagiarism over two columns he had written in The Boston Globe, three years apart. The Boston Globe forced him to resign for this. However within six months he was hired by New York based Daily News. This was followed by his recruitment at the Boston Herald. Mike has elaborately covered the 2016 US presidential elections. He is an ardent fan of baseball.

Mike is married to Anne Finucane. Anne Finucane works in The Bank of America. However the date of his marriage is not known. His family includes four children from his current marriage.
