At the age of 3 Mae began her career, she gave a voice over in an advertisement she did for Tyson Chicken. In 1994, When a Man Loves a Woman was the first film she appeared in starring Meg Ryan. In 1996, she got chance to work in two movies Independence Day and One Fine Day. In 2001 and 2002 she was part of a TV series named State of Grace, she played the role of Catholic girl grace.

In 2004 to 2008 she played role of Ann Veal in popular TV series Arrested Development. Mae made an appearance in season 9 of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. Mae also gave her voice for Katara a character in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Mae appeared in a HBO TV show In Treatment as Rosie.

In 2009, Mae appeared in another TV show named Parenthood playing the role of Amber Holt a rebellious teen. Mae also played role of Roxy Richter in the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
