John Amos was born in the year 1939 on December 7th. He was brought up in New Jersey in the United States. He was born to his parents John A. Amos and Anabelle P. His father was a mechanic and his mother was a homemaker. He belonged from a middle class family. He had no siblings and attended the East Orange High School. He went to this school from his childhood and even graduated from the same school in the year 1958.
He had a keen interest in drama and theatres during his school days. His family could not afford sending him to a separate drama class so he did not get any professional training or guidance. His friends helped him a lot to climb up the stairs and always inspired him to follow his dreams. He attended the Long Beach City College after completing his high school education. He did a major in Sociology and graduated from the Colorado State University. He wanted to do something for the society and thus, he pursued his university education with Sociology.
Besides being a social worker, he was also a great athlete. He loved to play football and other outdoor sports. He had also played several football matches as the member of the Colorado State Rams Football team. He had also played in the American Football League in the year 1964. He also took part in the United Football League in the same year.
In the year 1965, he participated in the Continental Football League with Wheeling Ironmen and Norfolk Neptunes. After a year, he signed a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs to play with them in the American Football League. His last professional football match was with the Victoria Steelers. Along with that, he took great interest in boxing and had also won the Golden Gloves.
He started his television career with the Good Times. He got his major television break in the year 1970 in The Mary Tyler Moore Show. He played the character of Gordy Howard and the series went on for continuous three years. He also appeared for the popular commercial of McDonald’s along with Anson Williams. After some popular appearances on the television, he appeared in the role of James Evans Sr.
While working in the show Good Times, he had some issues with his co-actor Norman Lear, due to which he left the show in the beginning of the fourth season. This raised a huge level of controversy in the media but none of them disclosed the fact about the main reason behind this controversy.
