William Jonas Armstrong was born on the 1st of January, 1981 in Dublin, Ireland. His parents also gave birth to his younger brother and sister. When Jonas was just six years old, his family moved to Lytham St. Annes, Lancashire, England. He was studying at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and in 2003, he graduated it with a BA in acting. Later, he appeared in Quartermaine's Terms at the Royal Theatre in Northampton with a role of Derek Meadle. At the Young Vic theatre in the London Borough of Lambeth Jonas firstly appeared in 2004, where he played Henry in The Skin of Our Teeth. In the same year, he was seen in seven episodes of the fourth series of the British television comedy-drama, Teachers on Channel 4, as Anthony Millington.


In January 2005, he performed role of Richard in Rutherford & Son at the Royal Exchange in Manchester. Soon, he appeared again on Channel 4 in the crime drama series The Ghost Squad as Pete Maitland. The following year, Armstrong took part as a guest star in the two-part crime drama Losing Gemma on ITV. His debut happened in 2006, when he got the role of Robin of Locksley, in the BBC's series based on Robin Hood. During shooting of the second series, Jonas got an injury. During a staged fight scene, he broke a metatarsal bone in his foot during a staged fight scene.

In 2007, he was a guest panelist on the BBC comedy panel game show Never Mind the Buzzcocks. The next year, the BBC announced that the role of Robin Hood played by Jonas would be ended in the third season. The last appearance of Jonas as Robin Hood was aired on 27 June 2009, with the statement that he was "looking for new possibilities". BBC gave an answer to his words and explained that "he'll be desperately missed". In 2008, he was seen in the horror film Book of Blood.

In 2009, he played the role of TA soldier Private Nick Calshaw in Episode 3 of the third series of BBC serial. In 2009, he read four CBeebies Bedtime stories on "The Bedtime Hour". In 2013, Jonas Armstrong was awarded by a "Stars on Horizon" for Walking with the Enemy at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.
