His father left the family and Gooding Jr. was brought up by his mother. He had to attend four different schools and he was a Class President in one of the schools. He married is childhood lover Sara Kepfer and he has three children out of this marriage. In 2014 Kepfer filed for legal separation and the couple filed for divorce in January 2017.
