Bijou Lilly Phillips was born on April 1, 1980 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Her father John Phillips is a musician too. Her mother Geneviève Waïte was native of South Africa and worked as an actress and model. She is the eldest of two children in her family. She has a brother Tamerlane, and three half-siblings, who was named Mackenzie, Jeffrey, and Chynna.
She has made her first appearance as a model in the age of 13, when she became the youngest lady to ever appear on the cover of Italian Vogue. The next year she decided to leave her school and moved to New York City, where she had her own apartment with a housekeeper. During that period she led a wild life, using alcohol and drugs.
