Typhoon Soudelor leaves death and chaos in China

Typhoon Soudelor swept across China on Saturday evening, causing at least 36.3 million euros of damage and knocking out power to more than two million homes.The storm left 17 people dead in China, most of them in the eastern Chinese cities of Wenzhou and Lishui, where heavy rains triggered mudslides and caused houses to collapse, state news agency Xinhua reported.

The Gurkhas have been serving Britain for 200 years

Today the Queen attends a pageant at the Royal Hospital in London to mark 200 years of Gurkha service to the British crown. This is a bitter-sweet commemoration. The recent earthquakes mean that British Gurkhas are back in Nepal; the first Gurkha engineers arrived to help the relief effort on April 30, the same day as a parade in London to rededicate the Gurkha Memorial.

Time will stop for a second on Tuesday night

The world’s clocks will be forced to stop for a brief second at Tuesday midnight, the 30th of June. That will happen as the “guardians” of time worldwide will add an interstitial second in order to correct the time and as a result the last minute of this month will have 61 seconds instead of 60.
