Russia is known to be conducting reindeer races, with reindeer herders in Russia’s remote northern Nenets region having enjoyed a race and open air concert to mark their professional holiday. Reindeer Day is celebrated by herders and their families on August 2 each year. Reindeer are central to life in this region and are used for meat and transportation.

The celebration for the staff was organized by a reindeer cooperative "HARP" in order to raise popularity of reindeer herder's profession and attract young men to join the company. A Finnish businessman, whose company sells reindeer skin to 150 countries across the world, was a guest of honor at the celebration. The break up of the Soviet Union and the economic crisis that followed hurt the once-developed reindeer breeding industry, which lost markets for its products and lacked investments.

This year HARP reindeer herders had a good reason to hold a cheerful celebration of their professional holiday - the company is one of the region's leaders in the industry Reindeer Day, a professional holiday of reindeer breeding workers, is celebrated annually on August 2nd in the region.
